When you are trying to become sober, part of your recovery will depend on finding the right support system . Obviously, the “right” support system will vary from one person to the next, but finding one for yourself could make all the difference in your recovery.

Looking to Friends and Family

Ideally, you will want to look to your friends and family for support. Unfortunately, not everyone will be in an ideal situation. If you have loved ones who have supported your decision to seek treatment and become sober, reach out to them if you believe that it will help. On the other hand, if your family hasn’t been supportive or if you have friends who have encouraged your substance abuse in the past, you might want to look elsewhere for support. Again, every person is different, so use your own judgment when you’re deciding who should be part of your support system.

Looking to Recovery Programs

If you don’t think you’ll get the support you’ll need from your family and friends, you can always look within your recovery program for help. You will be surrounded by people who are going through the same things that you are, and they will have the same goals as you. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you’re comfortable doing so. The chances are that you’ll end up supporting each other in your sobriety.

If you finish your initial treatment program and feel like you’re on your own, there are plenty of support groups near you. Churches often have support groups within their congregation, so that might be an option if you attend services regularly. If not, ask your doctor or members of your recovery program if they have any good recommendations. Finally, you can always look online for support groups, especially if you’re not entirely comfortable meeting people in person. You can chat with like-minded people on message boards, over Zoom, or in any other format that doesn’t require you to be around others in person. Of course, many of these groups have in-person meetups when you’re ready.

No matter how you want to go about it, finding a support network is crucial if you want to stay sober. If nothing else, you can always contact a drug and alcohol treatment center if you feel like you need one. Help will always be available to you, so don’t hesitate to seek it out.
